EC clears acquisition of Hamlet Protein by Goldman Sachs and Altor

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the acquisition of joint control over Hamlet Protein AS of Denmark by the investment funds The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. of the United States and Altor Fund IV Holding AB of Sweden.

Hamlet provides soy protein used in high-value animal feed. Altor currently has joint control over EWOS, a Norwegian company active in the production and supply of fish feed and nutrition for farmed fish, primarily for salmon and trout.

The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would not raise competition concerns because there are no overlaps between the companies' activities. Moreover, given Hamlet's low market share in the upstream market EWOS' competitors will continue to have sufficient access to soy protein and Hamlet's competitors will have sufficient alternative customers which use soy protein as input. The transaction was examined under the normal merger review procedure.

More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.7682.
